USA 25 August: New York City

On August 26th, 2011, we had the opportunity to honour the celebrated Bengali writer Mani Sankar Mukherjee, whose pen name is Sankar, in Jamaica, New York. Former Bangladesh Ambassador to the United Nations Anwarul Karim Chowdhury presented Mani Sankar with the World Harmony Run Torch-Bearer award. Ambassador Chowdhury, a long-time friend of Mani Sankar, is also Former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the UN and a 2010 recipient of the award.

Over a period of nearly sixty years, Sankar has written 87 books. In the 1970s, two of his books were made into acclaimed films by the renowned director Satyajit Ray. Sankar’s recent books contain insights into the lives of Bengal’s spiritual luminaries — Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and, most recently, Sri Chinmoy.

Sankar holds the World Harmony Run torch with Executive Director Salil Wilson and Ambassador Chowdhury. Sankar was in New York on the occasion of Sri Chinmoy’s 80th birth anniversary which coincided with the release in Kolkata of his biography of Sri Chinmoy “Achena Sri Chinmoy” (The Unknown Sri Chinmoy).

The World Harmony Run proudly supports the International Year of Youth (IYY) and the International Year of Forests (IYF) proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.

See the recent Youtube video on African experience which illustrates IYY slogan "Our Year Our Voice"  International Year of Youth - Zambia World Harmony. They surprisingly mention Presidents and UN Secretary-General in a unique way!
