Iceland 15 July: Hvolsvöllur - Kúðafljót

The day began at Hótel Hvolsvöllur, where we ended our run last night. Before we started running, we were able to express our gratitude to Björgvin, who works at Hótel Hvolsvöllur, but he was extremely nice to us last night and it is only because of him that we were able to publish yesterday's report.

Then we had another meeting with the spirited kids from the Sports Club Dímon. Well, not all 27 from yesterday were there, but 5 boys from yesterday and three newcomers - Kári Benónýsson, Þorbergur Vignisson and Ari Björnsson.

These 8 kids amazed us with their capacity, as they went on to run a distance of roughly 20 km!

Incidentally, this was not the last we saw of Sports Club Dímon's members, for, shortly after we said goodbye to these 8 boys, we met Ármann Fannar Magnússon together with his 5 year old son, Magnús Bjarni Fannarsson, and Guðni Sigþór Berglindarson. Ármann happens to be the brother of Ólafur Elí Magnússon, one of the organizers of the Dímon group, and had heard about the Harmony Run from his brother. Ármann decided to find us on the highway and, together, the three of them easily ran 5 km.

Next, Youth Sports Club Eyfellingur took the torch. Chairman Sigurgeir Ingólfsson has participated in every one of our five previous runs around the whole of Iceland, the first of which was back in 1987. This time, Sigurgeir couldn't make it and gave the responsibility over to his son, Símon Bergur Sigurgeirsson, who brought two friends along for the run: Þórdís Erla Ólafsdóttir and Lilja Dögg Guðnadóttir.

The three of them ran to the bridge across Jökulsá river, where Youth Sports Club Dyrhólaey received the torch. YSC Dyrhólaey had a big group of enthusiastic kids. It was nice to see so many kids from last year again, all looking one year older and bigger!

Just like last year, the kids from YSC Dyrhólaey kept going all the way to the township of Vík í Mýrdal - a distance of roughly 25 km - and it looked like they were just getting started! The names of these heroes from YSC Dyrhólaey are: Kristín Erla Benediktsdóttir, Guðmundur Eyjólfur Kristjánsson, Þorsteinn Björn Einarsson, Marínó Freyr Steinþórsson, Vigdís Eva Steinþórsdóttir, Ólöf Lilja Steinþórsdóttir, Elvar Orri Jóhannesson, Gunnar Ólafsson, Guðlaug Lilja Sævarsdóttir, Bergþór Bergsson, Magdalena Katrín Sveinsdóttir, Ragna Fríða Sævarsdóttir, Hafþór Ingi Sævarsson and Jakobína Kristjánsdóttir.

At Vík í Mýrdal, another group of heroes received the torch as Friðbert Elí Gíslason, Ásrún Halla Loftsdóttir, Guðbjörg María Lorange, Emilía Ósk Lorange and Breki Þór Sveinsson from YSC Drangur joined us for the next 2 hrs. The kids form YSC Drangur were quite young, which makes their achievement even greater.

As YSC Drangur was finishing, YSC Skafti showed up to take over with a big group that Harpa Ósk Jóhannesdóttir and her mother Steina Harðardóttir had organized.

Harpa Ósk Jóhannesdóttir, Valgerður Káradóttir, Elín Elva Káradóttir, Bergsteinn Kárason, Darri Dagur Sigurgeirsson, Breki Blær Sigurjónsson, Gestur Sigfússon, Bergur Sigfússon, Ármann Daði Gíslason, Ragnar Pálsson, Anna Karen Gunnarsdóttir, Konný Sif Gottsveinsdóttir and Pálína Pálsdóttir all maintained a brisk pace, stopping only at Kúðafljót, our final destination for the day at around 9 pm.

Finally, the World Harmony Run wishes to offer its gratitude to Þorgerður Einarsdóttir, from the Sports Council of Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla county and Guðný Sigurðardóttir, from YSC Dyrhólaey and all the multitude of organizers and helpers of today, whether we have got their names for our website or not.

The Vestur-Skaftafellssýsla county gave us an outstanding welcome this year.
