Italy 16 June: Treviso - Este

Last night we enjoyed the hospitality of the Franciscan monastery Chiesa Votiva, in the centre of Treviso. Padre Camillo was very nice and supplied us with everything we needed for a good night's sleep and a perfect start to the new day!

We went back to the spot where we had finished yesterday, but there was one big difference: the sky was blue and a hot day was ahead of us!

A city representative was already waiting, and the police guided us out of the city. It was really fun to run through this old city with its small streets and narrow turns...

This day was a day of running clubs! Italy is probably the best-organized country we know of for amateur runners. There is a running club in every village and the Italians organize thousands of races!

A new team was waiting every few kilometres; we met the first runners at Mirano, where we also had a short meeting with the sport representative of the city.

More runners joined in Mira, Paluello and Noventana! Very professional, they had organized refreshments along the road! We took mainly side roads, avoiding the traffic, but those roads are great! You get to see lots of old palaces and other places of interest.

In Padova, more runners joined in and the sport representative received us while a market and a wedding were in progress. So, running through downtown Padova turned out to be a real challenge!

Our great guide! He put up signs for our runners everywhere and collected them after we passed by!

In the afternoon we reached Abano, where another meeting with a sport representative took place. More runners!

Afterwards we escaped the weekend traffic, into the hills south-west of Padova, a beautiful national park. Lonely, hilly streets with most beautiful flora made the run a real pleasure; blossoming trees and flowers everywhere. It was like running in a garden.

The running teams of Turri and Baoni helped us to Este, where a city official welcomed us.

In front of the castle, a mountain-bike race was about to start; two-time women's world champion Luisa Bettio held the torch!

Before we went to our overnight accommodation in the mountains, we were invited for some pizza; like hungry wolves, we finished our slices in no time!
