Italy 1 April: Caltagirone - Catania

This morning we started running from Caltagirone in the beautiful Sicilian countryside.

Along the way we stopped to say hello to this gentleman that was on his way to a Ferrari ralley. He kindly invited Madhurima, our youngest runner, to take a seat in his car - his pride and joy.

We could see Mt. Etna in the distance overlooking the city of Catania, our destination for today. The mountain is still an active volcano and we could see whisps of steam hovering above its peaks.

Franco, our Italian coordinator discovers an april fools gag. It says "I'm a Lazy Runner".

Since we had two cars and lots of runners we decided to cover the distance as soon as possible so we could take a break to visit Mt. Etna. The slopes of the mountain are covered in volcanic rock that still produces heat, even now.

This house was completed destroyed many year ago following one of the biggest eruptions.

As we reached the top of the mountain it was interesting to see snow covering the warm ground.

We took the chance to run around the rim of a volcanic crater.

We had such fun sliding down the snow covered slope.

Molto divertente scivolare sulla neve.

I am sure the other Italians fooling around in the snow were surprised to see us with a flaming torch and running gear.

Pierre was jumping for joy being in the snow.

We returned to the outskirts Catania to meet our police escort. The Vespa scooters that the police ride in Italy are the best vehicles to guide our big van through the busy streets of Catania.

When we started to run through the city many people were still sleeping or eating at home and all the stores were closed but by the time we arrived the area was a hive of activity. Even some clowns joined us for a few blocks to our finishing point at Piazza Stesicoro. In the main square stands a statue of an elepant, the symbol of the city.

It was here that we met the former President, the Member of the Regional Commision of Fidal Sicilia, the Federation of Competitive Sports.

Farewell to our new friends, Tonino and Liliana. We hope to see them next year.

Arrivederci a i nostri amici Tonino e Liliana. Speriamo di incontrarli il prossimo anno.
